The Canon T4I has been released just before fathers day and is likely to be gifted to many dads this month. This will likely result in a lower price for Canon’s popular Canon T3I as well. Now you’ll be wondering if you should buy the Canon T4i or the Canon T3i.

What’s New with the Canon T4i?

The first notable upgrade to the Canon T4I is the DIGIC5 processor as opposed to the  DIGIC4 processor found  in the Canon EOS T3i. Since I’m a speed freak when it comes to electronics, this is important but not likely to be a compelling reason to buy the Canon T4I rather than the T3i.

Canon has added continuous auto-focusing in the release of the Canon Rebel. Many were disappointed to find Canon T4ithat the Canon T3i’s video mode was not auto-focusing. Most though, soon found that it really wasn’t necessary for them. This will be welcome upgrade for many and likely cut back on the complaints from novice DSLR users that were shocked to find that the video mode had to be manually focused.

Canon is also introducing a hybrid CMOS and a touch screen LCD. How effect these will be remains to be seen after testing is carried out and users report on the functionality of the touch screen. The helpfulness of the new touch screen seems doubtful to me but we will seen.

Pricing Difference Between Canon T4i and T3i

The difference in pricing for the two cameras with an 18 to 135mm stepping motor lens about $100. However, I noted that at the time this article is written, a Canon T3i body only is currently selling for just over $600. You can pick up this model be clicking here.

New Lens Design

Canon also announced the introduction of a new lens design. These lenses have a stepping motor that is quieter. The Canon T3I is susceptible to picking up the noises from the lens when using a video mode unless an external microphone is used.  This new lens design is indicated with “STM.”

A Compelling Upgrade to the Canon T4I

I can’t find a compelling reason to buy the Canon T4i if one already owns the T3I.

However, if you  have been in the market for a Canon T3i the T4I deserves strong consideration. The AF Servo Auto-focus in video mode is compelling, especially for beginners. It has a  faster rate of frames per second. The T4i shoots at 5 frames per second where the T3i shoots at 3.7 and the improved processor is the chief reason for my interest.  The DIGIC5 provides better picture quality and is faster than the DIGIC4.  Better pictures is what it should be all about.  You can order the Canon T4i now at Amazon by following this link.

I will follow this up with a full review of the T4I once more information is available. For now, I thought it important to alert camera shoppers that newer model is available.

Both cameras continue the well known Rebel brand from Canon
